A CONGREVE CLOCK

JOHN WILDING

Wheels to be crossed out / Pinions supplied on stubs to be cut off and fitted to arbor  1/2/3 or 4 pinions on one stub  PHOTO

This clock has an extraordinary fascination for the mechanically minded. The captive ball endlessly traversing the table from one end to the other has a mesmeric effect on those watching. It used to be a popular clock to place in the window of the High Street jeweller where it would guarantee an audience. You can be sure that there will always be a gathering round the Congreve clock in the British Museum. Every year at the Model Engineer Exhibition there will be at least one of these clocks made to my design from this book. It is not a good timekeeper and must be regarded as a horological gimmick to some extent. In this workshop manual the opportunity has been taken to update information on the material suppliers, to reprint some of the illustrations which were of poor quality and to include a trouble shooting section at the end of the manual. One interesting feature where the clock differs from many commercial ones is the tilting table which in this design is fabricated and skeletonised. This makes it lighter and requires less power from the clock movement to tilt it. The clock has formed the project for many mechanical engineering apprentices and students. The illustrations show the clock constructed using the Myford ML 7 lathe.                                                                                 J Wilding
